Tangled birthday party goodie bags

....and a little about sewing with kids

These are the little bags we made for the birthday.

I say "we" because these are easy enough for a 6 year-old to do a lot of the work.

She did a great job.

We used leftover fabric from the Rapunzel costume (see tutorial HERE)

J cut the pattern pieces and I serged around them

She pinned them together, right sides together.

She sewed around the 3 sides of the rectangle pieces.

A couple tips about sewing with little ones -

I have a "snail" (ie. slower) setting on my sewing machine, so we generally

use that.

I put the sewing machine in a corner of the table so that she can sit facing

the machine, and I sit on the side so I can see what she is doing

and help feed/adjust the fabric if necessary while she sews.

We set the foot pedal of the machine on a little chair under the table

so she can reach easily.

Open up the seam between the two lines of sewing.

This is where you will thread the ribbon through.

I had to do this part.

This was the first bag and the two lines of sewing were too close together

(and too close to the top of the bag too)

Do the same on the other side seam.

Tie the ends of the ribbon (take a match to them to seal and stop fraying)

J was very proud to tell her friends that SHE had made the party goodie bags.
