I started with these old jeans…
With a seam ripper and scissors, I cut the trousers into 4 sections
and cut the pieces for the skirt.
I originally intended to incorporate one of the pockets into the skirt (because little girls always need a pocket!) but never got around to it.
These were the measurements that I used for a 3T skirt (waist measurement 53 cm/21 inches):
a (the waistband): 38 x 9cm (15 x 3.5 inches) – cut 2 pieces
b: 20 x 10cm (8 x 4 inches) – cut 4
c (pleated skirt): 41 x 23cm (16 x 9 inches) – cut 4
Mark where you will make the pleats with pins or a fabric marker
Make sure your pleats are even and evenly spread out, so the skirt will hang properly.
Here is what worked for mine (only c piece represented below):
Lay your pleated piece (c) against b. They need to be the same width.
Topstitch a rectangle on each one of the pleats.
With right sides together, sew the 2 front c pieces together and the 2 back c pieces.
Pleats should face the middle. Press the middle seam then topstitch all the way down.
Do the same with b pieces.
Then with right sides together sew b pieces to c pieces.
Press and topstitch across the whole front (do the same for the back)
Repeat with waistband (a)
With right sides together sew down side seams
Create waistband casing for the elastic
Topstitch around the waistband leaving an opening to thread the elastic through (use a safety pin)
Overlap the elastic ends and sew (zigzag) them together.
Sew the waistband opening shut.
Topstitch around the top of the waistband too.
Finish off by making the hem at the bottom of the skirt
